Patios have a variety of substrates depending on their location, and the structural integrity, durability and high load capacity of exterior porcelain pavers make them usable in any setting.
A seating area in the garden typically has a substrate of grass or compacted gravel and sand, whereas patios attached to structures are often concrete. Versatile porcelain pavers can be set directly on grass or slightly countersunk in it by removing the top layer. They can be set on gravel beds, typically with a top layer of leveling sand. Over concrete slabs the pavers can be mortared and grouted, or for a quick and simple alternative set on rubber pads designed specifically for supporting and aligning pavers.

At just 3/4” thick, overlaying porcelain pavers on concrete or existing tiles often does not interfere with vertical restrictions such as door sills. Their large 24”-48” format allows for many square feet to be laid quickly and efficiently, and at just 9lbs sq ft installers much prefer porcelain over concrete or brick.

Adjustable Height Pedestal Systems
Elevate and level pavers over slightly sloping substrate like concrete. Pedestals range in adjustable heights from 1” to 30” inches, provide self-leveling heads with built in spacer tabs allowing water to freely drain off pavers to the substrate below.
Paver Pads For Low Height
Elevate pavers 1/4”-1” above substrates like concrete for a clean, fast install without mortar. Pads range in height from 1/4” - 3/8” thick and are stackable to 1” high. Spacer tabs built into pads maintain a 1/8” gap for efficient water drainage off the paver surface.
Mortar And Grout
Where the patio structure can accept pavers laid directly on the substrate, such as concrete, traditional mortar and grout products work well with porcelain pavers. Installing without grout lines is acceptable.
Gravel Beds
Compact a bed of gravel according to local construction codes and lay porcelain pavers over top, using spacers supplied by European Paver Company to maintain a 1/8” gap between pavers for efficient water drainage.
Grass
Remove a layer of soil inside area to be paved, fill with gravel to a depth appropriate for proper water drainage, finish prepping the bed by compacting, and place porcelain pavers overtop, slightly counter-sunk to maintain their position and minimize trip hazards.
Sand
In prepared sand beds, leveling sand can be poured over a bed of gravel constructed according to local codes, with pavers laid over using sand spikes from European Paver Company to maintain paver position and spacing.
